Doesn't take long for your "lull" week to become "unlulled"..."de-lulled"..."anti-lulled". Anyway, last night, we took the kids to their first ever karate class. This class is geared specifically for kids and is part of our membership at the club. We've talked before, thinking Nicholas might like to try one of the martial arts. Also think the discipline involved would benefit him. He'd learn to listen and follow instructions without clowning around. Besides, he likes to "punch and kick" and "hiiiiiiyaaaa" through the house so perhaps this is a good fit. However, we did say he is not allowed to "punch and kick" until he learns the correct way and only if the instructor tells him to.
We asked Samantha to join him for these next couple of weeks (before dance starts up), figuring it would help Nicholas by having big sis nearby. Plus theirs the benefit to her of two workouts per week. We watched as he followed directions provided by the Sensei (instructor). He really did a great job! It's not just the moves but also the vocabulary. Many of the words are Japanese - something that I think will be great for him to learn, since it's a part of his heritage.
When we got home, Mat and I talked about the class and how well it went. Two thumbs up in this mom's opinion. That's when Mat shared with me a conversation between Nicholas and Samantha that I'd missed. Mat had heard Nicholas say "We go to ballet and cheerleading for you. Tonight, we're going to do something for me." My heart about broke when Mat told me. It's true - most of the activities we are involved in have centered around Samantha. And even though there are several that Nicholas also partakes in, they originated with Big Sis (soccer, baseball). Mat told me not to be too hard on myself. We all know it's hard being the second child since many roads have already been traveled by the older sibling. But for tonight, it was all about Nicholas. I hope this is something he'll enjoy and want to continue. At least until the next Nicholas activity rears its head.
