So, Nicholas came home from school the other day. He told us that, during math, his teacher mentioned something about his math scores and moving up to 4th grade. He wasn't really sure what that all meant. We thought we had a good idea, but dropped her an email to clarify.
Sure enough, she proposed that (if we think it's the right thing/fit) Nicholas be moved up to the 4th grade math class. He's in the gifted program here (grades 2 thru 5) and they all do math at the same hour, with each grade actually functioning one grade level higher. So, his 3rd grade class is doing 4th grade math. Well, she suggested that he take math with the 4th grade class (meaning, he'd be doing 5th grade work). He is very excited at the thought! And so are we.
Math is Nicholas' strength (it also is for Samantha). And being able to move up in math was one of the big "pluses" in his decision to be placed into the gifted program and move to the new school. And he always does so much better when he's challenged, and he continues to learn. When things are too easy, he can become disruptive in class (too much extra time on his hands). We think this will be a win/win for all of us.
Yesterday, he brought home a week's worth of math (so he can "catch up" with the rest of the class). He's was doing great, staying focused on the task at hand. He'll have it all done by Monday so should have lost too much time.
We're obviously very proud of him. Why wouldn't we be?
