Baseball season comes to a close

After four tournaments and many practices, Nicholas' first All-Star season has come to a close. They played in the championship game this morning, losing a close one, 9-5. Our boys played tough but had a couple too many errors in the field (the game was really closer than the score indicates). They played another local team for the trophy. Nicholas played a great tourney, making some awesome plays. Even in the triple digit heat.

He had a great line drive that was snagged by the defender (too bad cuz it was a beauty; great play by their guy). With 2 outs in the 6th (the final inning), Nicholas came to the plate. He hit a great shot and advanced the runner to 3rd. Unfortunately, the base coach sent him on our next batter's first pitch and he was thrown out at 2nd to end the game. He was truly bummed for making the final out. However, when the coach sends you, you gotta run.

I think the big win of the tourney was yesterday. Our boys were down 7-0, then 7-1 but they kept battling. They finally put some hits together and took a 8-7 lead. That was short-lived as the opponents went up 9-11. Final inning. We had to out-and-out win the game in order to go to championship (per the tourney rules, tie goes to team who held the last lead at end of an inning). Our boys held them in top half of inning. Then, the mojo happened. One single put one of our kids on. Nicholas got walked so we had baserunners. Both boys advanced on steals (on 3rd and 2nd). Both steal home on passed balls. Score now tied...and no outs. Another gets walked. After 3 steals into home, our boys win 12-11! That was probably the biggest win we've had, even more so than our win against our crosstown rivals for the championship on Independence Day weekend. They worked hard and didn't give up for that hard-fought win.

So, over 4 tourneys, Nicholas picked up one 3rd place trophy, two 2nd places, and one Championship. Gotta like that. He had a great post-season and is already looking forward to spring baseball to start up. At least then, we won't be dealing with 100-degree temps...just freezing cold winds!
