OMG, where did the time go? Actually, the problem has been that we've had much too much going in our lives. And February was pretty much jam-packed! The BIG events were celebrations of birthdays for the two men in my life. Yes, Mat and Nicholas each added a year of experience under their belts. And Samantha (our resident baker) made cakes for both of them. Spice cake with vanilla frosting for dad and triple chocolate for little brother (choco cake, choco frosting, mini choco chips). No birthday party just yet for Nicholas due to the crazy schedule that he and Mat have been keeping. Read on...
Nicholas and Mat finished their inaugural season of AAU basketball. All things considered, it was a very good year. Although they didn't fair too well in tournament play (most other teams have been together for several years and are definitely bigger than our guys), they did really great during the league play, finishing in 2nd place for the second half. And the game they lost to the first place team was one that they should have won. Another great plus about this basketball team was that Nicholas got to meet and play with several boys from KA (KN's crosstown rival baseball league). One of the boys, Jake, was on KA's 9-year old All-Star team and played against Nicholas in all 3 games where KN faced KA (yes, we remember him and yes, he's definitely an All-Star). Two of the other boys (Brock and Easton) were also on KN post-season teams. And it turns out that Brock was on the team that Tyson Foods (our regular season team) faced during city tournament. That team knocked us out of the playoffs (Kansas City tiebreaker that went 9 innings, then we ultimately lost to the clock). Anyway, it will give this coming year's city tournament an added bonus, getting to see some familiar and friendly faces (okay, maybe not as friendly as when we're on the same team).
Speaking of baseball, Nicholas has been training throughout the off-season by participating in a baseball academy since last fall, another clinic with some fellow KN boys, plus a KRUSH hitting clinic. He's worked on his swing (making solid contact more often) and his pitching (steadily improving in all aspects - speed, accuracy, and variety as he now as three solid pitches in his repertoire). And he really showed his stuff at this week's Minor A tryouts. He had 3 solid liners to the outfield (plus 2 fouled balls), fielded all 3 grounders at short (including one backhand with 3 great tosses to first) and in center field (to 2nd base). Technically, he didn't need to try out since Mat was selected as one of the 6 coaches. But it's always good to try out and, in this case, several Major coaches got to see him in action (never a bad thing). Very excited that Mat will be coaching again this year. I know the team is in great hands. Tonight also happens to be baseball draft night....good luck, sweetie!
Samantha is our dancing machine and is very excited for Fridays to roll around (as that's the night they have company rehearsals). And our ballet company will be performing as part of an extravaganza next weekend. Can't wait!
