Tuesday was the first night of the our intercity tournament. The intercity tournament occurs after both our league and our crosstown rival league (KA) finish their regular seasons. Teams from each league play a team from the other league with pairings based on how each team placed during regular season of their respective leagues. The first place team from our league earns the right to face the last place team from the opposing league, and so on.
As you know, our team didn't have quite as stellar a year as our last year's team did. We ended the year in 6th place out of 7 teams...which meant we faced KA's 3rd place team (KA's league has one more team than ours, so their 1st place team got a bye). As it turned out, the KA team had three 10-year old All-Stars on their team. It ultimately ended up being a duel between All-Star pitchers. Colten and Nicholas each pitched 3 innings for us (Nicholas pitching innings 4/5/6). And PITCH they did! They were able to shut down the KA team's hitting. However, their pitchers were doing the same to our team.
Going into the bottom of the 6th, we had a 3-2 lead... and Nicholas on the mound. With one out and a runner on 2nd, their next batter was given the sign to bunt. Nicholas rushed off the mound, got to the ball, and made the throw to first to get the out. Two outs. Their next batter came to the plate and eventually put the bat on the ball. He hit a hard line drive towards the shortstop side of the mound. Nicholas got his glove out and was able to knock it to the ground. He quickly got to the ball, turned and fired it to first...getting the final out and the win!
OMG, to say our boys were excited would be an understatement! It was an amazing sight to see. After much adversity, it was great to see them pull together and get a great win. And each of us, as parents, couldn't have been more proud!
